A survivor of Kristallnacht and later Bergen-Belsen, the author describes the source of her inspiration, an “Angel of Poetry.” Her diary serves as a springboard for this collection, which includes her commitment to poetry written during a turbulent childhood and a haunted adulthood. The sorrow resonates. Most poems are trenchant and laced with irony. Some date as early as 1936, where they reflect the wonderment of an adolescent who poignantly tries to make sense of the growing catastrophe facing Jews in Germany and eventually in the rest of Europe. The author includes poems written in her mother tongue language of German.
